FOCBOX UNITY | Official

Wondering if there is a recommendation for a fuse. Thanks.

It’s been quiet for a little bit. I know you guys are busy. Is there going to be a China video for the Unity? How are things going over there?

I think it was posted before but i can’t seem to find the size to drill the hole for the switch. @Deodand may i know what sized hole do i have to drill to mount the switch to my enclosure?

So a M12 clearance hole

Awesome! I’m using another antispark and it’s about the same diameter. So no need to fill up or enlarge. Thanks @Blasto!

Hey Guys! Sorry about the lack of updates from China, partly due to my own jet lag and partly because even after we got back we were still sorting through a few details/fixes to make sure everything went smoothly, and I wanted to post solutions for you guys not problems.

We identified a few interesting challenges when implementing all our updated testing processes for the unity and the raptor 2.1. It was definitely a struggle (way harder than I imagined) but also quite rewarding once we got everything working. Most things were just minor details that we were able to find quick solutions for.

Toward the end of the week we identified a rather strange behavior with the power switch when testing our motors within a full raptor 2.1 assembly, that didn’t occur anywhere else before. Spinning up the motors at specific speeds was (rarely and intermittently) causing false positives on the power switch press detection within the MCU. The power switch within the raptor 2.1 passes through our bms which extends the switch wires by about 70mm and we also updated the switch to have longer wires for the DIY people that might want a little more slack in the switch wires.

We came to realize when the momentary switch wasn’t pressed this wire was acting like an antenna. Further testing showed that only very specific switch wire lengths cause any issue, too long and it goes away too short and it goes away. If we tried voltage probing the pin the issue would disappear as well so it was impossible to monitor without an active probe. EMI demons.

I devised some software fixes that patched over the problem, but ultimatley we decided the safest solution was to add a small capacitive load at the base of the switch wire to add impedance that will damp out any antenna oscillations before being read. When you guys recieve your units, you should see a little 0603 cap between pins 3 and 4 of the switch connector:

This is my work with sub-optimal soldering station. Should look cleaner on the units we send out. This fix was passed to the factory a few days ago and since then all the units are being modified and re-tested. The next batch of unities will of course have this capacitor added to the pcb layout but for now this fix should ensure no strange behavior with switch false-positives. Though this issue may have only surfaced in just a few peoples builds, we are determined to launch the safest and most reliable motor controller available. Since the fix can be applied quickly without disassembling the units, they should still be shipping out within the week.

Man I work in Biomedical Engineering for a small startup currently working on scaling up production. For you to find that specific wire lengths were acting as a frequency amplifier feedback loop is honestly quite the accomplishment. I’ve seen small inexplainable (gremlins/demons) problems off track our work for months. Good work knocking this out!

I wasn’t wrong about the factories looking neater than mine:

when is the second batch going to ship?

If i ordered my direct drive and unity on black friday, when will they ship?

I ordered mine on October 31 and send it to the end of December

so its not shipping till December?

Any word on when these are going to ship out to the people who preordered first?

pretty sure it’s shipping December with the raptor hubs.

Above in the huge wall of text above he says they should be out this week or next…

Must be the enclosure.

That gasket is so nice. Did you use a whole sheet, and xacto out the cavity?

Yes, posting a build thread AFTER I ACTUALLY RIDE THE BOARD
