Hand Lay Carbon Fiber Wrapping / Skinning Without Vacuum Bagging

Nope, but actually have all the materials on hand, helping @ARetardedPillow lay up an enclosure and then I’ll try skinning that one, if I’m happy, skin the zenith enclosure to match the deck :yum:

Im really curious. I was thinking about getting one of psychos new longer one piece enclosures and skinning it.

I would vacuum bag it if you have the materials…

how did you connect the wires form the vesc to the battery? I’m doing a vanguard build and your’s looks incredible.

Jumping late into the conversation, with vacuum bag it would be the same process? just after placing the cloth fabric you would need to place the enclosure on a vacuum bag? Trying to understand the process to repair my enclosure

Hand laying ends with imperfect surfaces, vacuum infusion requires less post skinning manual labor.

You’d need some consumables like the bagging and tubing, as well as a peel layer, infusion media and filter jacket, and resin. As well as non consumables like a resin trap, and a vacuum pump.

There are some good YouTube videos on vacuum infusion if you decide to go that route… which would be way to much to explain in a thread like this…

Like decky said, but an alternative to infusion would be wet layup vacuum bagging. That method is perhaps even more difficult than infusion, as there is a deadline for the bagging. @whitepony is, IMO, extremely proficient in the vacuum bagging process. You should check out his threads about it!

I recently picked up a deck I’d like to use for my build. It’s really light, looks like 3 layers of wood and fiberglass on top and bottom. It has medium flex and I’d like it to have less. Was thinking of doing a top later of Carbon fiber. Would bottom be better? Or should I do both? And is there a particular cloth that’s best for my needs? received_185785145452243

Carbon fiber is strong in its tinsel strength. As such, the effective way to use it is on the bottom of the deck. It won’t do much for stiffness on the top

Thank you for the quick and clear reply.

Ordering theses, thinking it’s enough for two layers. Might try making cheep vacuum+bag thing. Seems like a flat board would be easy for hand laying tho.

Definitely do a hand layup if just skinning a deck.

I did this and it turned our great on an enclosure.

Question. If I’m planning on doing a second layer of carbon. Do I need to add pigment to the second layer base coat?

I posted a vid comment #41 I think. No pigment used. Black carbon fibre over a white base. No visible white after the first layer in this case. I used west systems ultra clear. For the sake of it if you are doing only one layer and need to make sure then just add the pigment imo.

My finish looked super shinning like this after applying the epoxy and anytime you apply a wet cloth to it, but when its dry it doesnt look shiny at all. I ended up using this kit which was awesome, but it just doesn’t look polished.

Thoughts on what I can user to get it shinier?

@achatham

I wet sanded down to 2000 grit then polished out with Meguiars polishing compound (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001O7PNNM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and a Power Ball (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0007RDVD4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) on a battery powered drill.

Turned out pretty good.

Thanks @JeffDJ , I might try that. I actually looked at that polish. Did your finish look similar to mine prior to the polish?

Yes, the surface was very smooth, but didn’t have any shine.
