Maybe donā€™t have a place I can do a lot of work so building is a little difficult.

I said building/ your buils. So you could start a thread and post details about your build. Battery, motor kv, all of that.

@lox897 I plan to start a build thread when I have a few more details and specifics narrowed down and look forward to the help and knowledge that can be gained here!

@Monk Nice to welcome a member closer to my age. Iā€™m almost 56 and building an e-board for commute. Please post a thread with your project so we can follow. I am current building Project Zephyr. Cheers.

the most obvious way to limit the speed that I can think of is electronic. you can program the setting in the ESC to limit the speed. that way it doesnā€™t matter what motor / gearing combo you use, you can have the most torque and biggest motor possible for hills or whatever but still limit speed with the ESC.

Thanks to those of you who have welcomed me to this forum. I will take the advice given and start a new thread as soon as I figure out just how to do that as itā€™s something Iā€™ve actually never done before. Sad but true. I have been studiously compiling a list of design preferences as my research has progressed and thereā€™s really nothing of note that I havenā€™t already seen successfully excecuted. No sense reinventing the wheel right? So I will look over my component wish list and post it for feedback. One thing I must admit I am curious about and clearly must be missing something on is why I havenā€™t seen a bevel gear drivetrain arrangement with a drive bevel gear fastened in the same manner as the drive pulleys in a belt driven system. Surely this has been explored. Iā€™ve seen plenty of bevel gears and pinion combinations of what would likely be very close to the ratios comparable to the belt drive systems so commonly employed. Maybe the flex in the trucks or some other reason makes tolerances more of an issue than the forgiveness of a belt driven system. Or maybe itā€™s noisier. Or could it be that the pinion bevel gear would require the motor to be mounted so close to the truck hanger that it becomes impractical. No matter. Belts are our friends right? I have finalized my deck plan and am just about ready to move from concept to build. I will share more in a new thread but Iā€™d like to thank you again for the warm welcome.

I have wondered the same thing about a geared systemā€¦Itā€™s doable, but my concern is it would be hard to keep lubricated. Maybe noisy too.

Iā€™ve seen planetary gears used, but durability is a concern with them. Iā€™m personally moving toward a chain-driven setup.

Chain drives are LOUD.

Richard from SW England ā€“ new to forum. A friend showed me his electric skateboard about this time last year, a Boom Borda that heā€™d replaced motor batteries, ESC and remote on. Too much fun not to have one myself so found a bargain Boom Borda on Ebay, stuck on a 245kV motor (just 3 holes to drill on existing mount to make fit), 6S Lipos, 16T drive. Having read a little more about whatā€™s what I now realise how fortunate I was that this set up worked so well given my ā€˜that should do the jobā€™ shopping style.
Push start, good speed and range ā€“ many happy miles and jaunts to the pub. The local council were even good enough to reward my construction efforts by building a new housing estate with a slalom road way. I wasnā€™t happy having to push start, nor with the noise of the motor, so decided that more oomph was needed. My solution, step up to 10S with a new ESC. Having watched Benjamin Vedders video of a standing start on carpet ā€“ I ordered a VESC. The chap that got me started knows a little about electronics, is great with a soldering iron and was happy to be tasked with fitting and setting up the VESC ā€“ he has now ordered one for himself. Anyhow, long story short, 10S VESC 245kV ā€“ gentle smooth acceleration (no problem from standing start), just went faster and faster ā€“ until speed wobbles and major impact stopped play. Luckily other than a few cuts and grazes, an odd bit of bone sticking out and torn muscles in shoulder I was not overly damaged. Few lessons learnt, as you get older you heal slower and red lining on first outing is not a good idea. After a little research Iā€™ve realised there is a more to building an electric skateboard than bolting together some bits. The set up Iā€™d created, on paper, had a top speed of just over 40mph, the VESC was set up to the motors rating which although stops the motor from burning out much reduced previous power. Thanks to this forum and information shared Iā€™ve hopefully learnt the error of my ways ā€“ 192kV arrived today and variety of pulleys by end of the week. Iā€™ve a second deck so can re construct earlier set up and have time to experiment and learn the ways of the new. Also bought a helmetā€¦. Bone sticking out? Ouchā€¦

Overstated bone injury in last post ā€“ wasnā€™t sticking out literally, more a small bit of bone under the skin that shouldnā€™t have been there. Earlier crashes were not nearly as bad. Looking at my injury statistics the relationship between speed and harm is non-linear, stick in age coefficient and damage graph peaks hugely. Torn and bruised muscles are going to take a fair while to heal, physio has been great and thermotherapy is just sitting in a whirlpool at the local SPA, thereā€™s even a bar, so not all bad. Pulleys arrived yesterday, will get on with converting other deck soon. Itā€™s interesting looking at pictures and videos of projects ā€“ beautiful carbon fibre boards, precision engineering/machining and attention to detail is wonderful to behold. Iā€™d like to show my next build but am a little worried it wonā€™t be up to forum standard, although far from a botch they are not the most elegant or lightweight of builds ā€“ more a quick and easy convert of an existing product into something with grunt, speed and range suitable for the pathways and roads around me. Hi, I first had the idea to strap my old rc car stuff to my long board about a year ago. I got sick of pushing myself for miles after my dogs got tired and stopped pulling me. A lot of research later and I found this amazing community. I just completed my first build and will post it soon. Details are: Ehlers 40" drop through, Carvon single hub, Mamba monster 2 esc, 2x 5000mah 3s in series, Quanum rx/tx. I have it all stuck to the bottom of the board with a @longhairedboy enclosure protecting it all. I have only taken it out twice so far since its 25 degrees out, and I couldnā€™t wait to test it. Plans for the future will be more batteries and better rx/tx. Cheers! see you guys around

almost same story , almost . i have 2 eboards . 1st is ready to ride DC motor 500W

, 2nd is dual diagonal BLDC motor .

i didnt broke my wrist from an eboarding , i slipped on a wet floor suddenly while walking , not from board cruising . i fell on my back while my right arm tried to break that fall .

aaaand we both injured our right arm . mineā€™s broken at wrist . upgraded with titanium brace and screws .

Adam from California here. Just placed my order for a raptor dual. Now for the tough partā€¦waiting for it to arrive. Skated a bit as a kid, 20 year break, now skating again with my kids. Really excited about the eboards. Big reason I went with the raptor dual was the open source mindset and idea sharing that takes place on this forum and others like. I figured if something went wrong, Iā€™d have a better shot at diagnosing and problem solving with known products like the exertion motors, space battery, vesc, etc than a mystery motor and electronics out of a Marbel board. Course the power and range of the raptor dual was pretty sexy too. Anyway, the plan is too get comfortable with my board then tackle a DIY board project with my son this summer.
