How important would the X brace be for a regular top mount deck? Is it common for decks to split or the screw heads to work their way through?

I’m currently using an 8ply Canadian Maple deck.

They do eventually work their way through. These spread the load nicely. Washers work ok too depending on the hardware you use. But these have a badass factor that definitely adds performance. :+1:
