Thermoforming a Kydex Battery Enclosure

That’s the thickness I got. It’s solid. I haven’t formed my enclosures yet, but I don’t see any reason it won’t be thick enough. hth

Yes. Plenty strong and any thicker would be much harder to form.

Do you experience any screws coming loose from the vibrations? Especially those thumb screws?

Do you think you could send me a link to the batteries you got? Thanks. well maybe thanks

How strong is kydex compared to abs plastic? is it as rigid?

I did lose one at the beginning. I put nylon washers under the thumbscrews and try to crank them as tight as possible by hand.

These are Zippy 20C 3S 5000mah. https://hobbyking.com/en_us/zippy-flightmax-5000mah-3s1p-20c.html

Running 4 in series for 12S.

Kydex is VERY strong. I’ve had no problems with my enclosure.

Where to get Kydex sheets in europe?

eBay… 5 euros a sheet plus shipping

heres one thicker and longer and a little more costly.

Part of it is what size enclosure you are going to make.

Thanks for sharing! Do you know if someone on ebay offer other ‘‘tones’’, something like this:

Shipping from their site costs a lot (23.3 Eur) + sheet itself is 18eur… Plus, it is not 300x200, but 300x150mm

Best I found for my liking:

Will probably keep looking

HI man great videos :+1:

i am going to use kydex for my build because of you!

one quick question, I am going to go for one lager sized enclosure insted of two small ones, will that work? I am wondering because i never used the material before and don’t know how well it can flex.

It should work fine. The advatage of doing two enclosures is that if you have some kind of issue with your batteries, your esc/vesc will be protected to an extent. It can also help if you have a flexible board since you can put the two enclosures on opposite ends, thus avoiding the middle where the board bends the most. @m4almbergs

This is what i ended up with. My kydex is 0.125 and it was really hard to mold it. I had to put it back into the oven 3 times in order to achieve good results. But this enclosure is bulet proof bc of the thickness of the kydex. I can stand on it.

Who would have thought? I should have realized kydex can be used for other things other than Airsoft pistol holsters.

How would one go about making holes for the case to run wires and stuff through to motor and such.

a drill…?

Well I know that but it’s easier to drill when it’s flat. I used a drawer organizer (plastic) for the longest time on my board and I just used an old soldering iron that had a blunt tip as my way to make holes. That’s what I’m asking.
