I think in sf, one will be fine. Most of the cops are super chill here, and would only care if your acting reckless in the way you are riding. But outside of sf, idk. I got a ticket for skating a skatepark after hours (they didn’t lock or close the gates, and the signs were not very clear) in redwood city, and the cops where absolute dicks. What kind of cop gives a ticket for skating a skatepark? The same that would give a ticket for riding an electric skateboard.
New Law in California states that it is legal to operate an electric skateboard on any road where the speed limit does not exceed 35mph. Rider must be at least 16 and wear a helmet. And it is legal to use the bike lane if the speed limit is over 35mph. I found this while taking a traffic school course for a speeding ticket.

Now we just need more drivers to get tickets so they can learn this new law in traffic school. I get crazy looks every time I stop at a stop sign or light on surface streets in LA.
