How do you charge your longboard?

Hello, I’m just curious how people charge their longboards. For examples: Do you charge them by taking the battery/ies out and charging them externally or charging them through a plug on your board like any production electric longboard out there? If you do the later do you think you could enlighten me how you do it as I am curious and it will also make charging much easier.

Cheers, Doug

P.S. I’ll be running 2x 5s 5000mah batteries in series

Use a thing called BMS.

And plug it into what?

To the batteries, and the cell wires.

The battery monitor plugs directly into the battery and has balance leads going to each cell or parallel cells. This is a middle man between your battery and the ESC and other electronics. Some BMS’s incorporate their own switch so you don’t have to unplug batteries when not in use. They also have overcharge and over discharge protection to further help keep your batteries safe. This allows you to have a single charge wire going in and all the cells will be balanced by the end of the charge cycle. Otherwise you will have to remove your LiPo cells and use a balance charger to make sure the cells stay balanced.

Read up on what BMS’s are, they can be arranged to charge your setup through a simple one plug charging port and a laptop style charger. I use 2 MEB one plug charging setups for my board (2x 4s batteries in series) and they work great link here. That way it is one plug charging and you can balance charge every time using your regular hobby charger. You can see my diagram here. Each set of balance ports and charge ports connect to one charging adaptor so I charge one battery and then the other.

this is how I charge my board: https://esk8content.nyc3.digitaloceanspaces.com/uploads/db2454/optimized/3X/4/7/47a647b6ab2a48a5cd5402f021eb13f68d0e7953_1_690x388.jpg

I pull a plug and so I split my 10s battery in 2 x 5s and charge it with a dual balance charger.

Ah thank you. That diagram is really clear! Time to do some more research on BMS’s!

Thanks! It took a hell of a long time to design everything and lay it out clearly lol. I must admit a BMS is the cleaner/simpler option though I didn’t use one simply because it was cheaper to not make one and I honestly couldn’t wrap my head around it fully.

After a few seconds of looking at that diagram and working it out it clicked in my mind! lol… So do the BMS’s have a power input on them, Or is it soldered onto the connector? Sorry I’m new the BMS Scene xD

Yeah I hear you! Its slightly confusing but a much cleaner option for charging. I’m doing my research now and hopefully will be able to use one in my board

Sweet! If you do be sure to let me know how everything goes! I will most likely use one in my second build.

I dont know how much you know/if this will be useful but I found this video. The first bit is common sense though… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZyY1dpka7c

So, I’m leaning about BMS systems, how would I plug two 5s batteries into a 10s BMS?

I’m pretty sure you would need a balance adaptor/splitter to turn 2 5s balance ports to 1 10s one. (You are talking about the balance ports right?)

Yes I am. So a series connector to connect the positive and negative and a balance adaptor to turn both the balance connectors into a 10s right? Do you know where I can find a lead? All I can find is 2*3s to make 6s on hobbyking…

eBay maybe?

Here is my Lipo with bms build thread. I used 5 2s packs but 2 5s packs would work. I charge it with either a 42v 5a scooter charger or my lab power supply

this is my diagram:

A BMS will come with a balance harness with a 10s connector that matches it. All you need is two 5s extensions. You remove the male end, plug the female end into your battery balance connectors and wire the cut end to the balance harness from the BMS omitting the ground balance wire from each pack. Note: Of course, wire the cut ends to the BMS harness first, then plug them into the battery packs. http://www.ebay.com/itm/2x-NEW-8-INCH-JST-LIPO-5S-BALANCE-LEAD-EXTENSION-WIRE-ADAPTER-US-SELLER-/351549758139?hash=item51d9ff9abb:g:fWgAAOSwA4dWHp1y
