A safe build/DB Lunchtray/"Jacob trucks"/Jacob hub Motors/ Enertion VESCs/Space cell/lipo flat pack

Hey guys just an update: I soldered together the Canus cable to go between two vescs. I think it’s fine but I would appreciate confirmation. https://scontent.fakl1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t34.0-12/13815260_1041417235894621_745757413_n.jpg?oh=1d3512b06c30f5127ecff97a83d6fb29&oe=578F7099 And I followed @lox897’s advice with connecting the three xt-60’s together in parallel, used hot glue as well as heat shrink after I soldered the connectors together. https://scontent.fakl1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t34.0-12/13814560_1041416769228001_380316808_n.jpg?oh=210d38b9cc3a90b02446caeae361e140&oe=5790AA80 https://scontent.fakl1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t34.0-12/13734555_1041416759228002_186000711_n.jpg?oh=eb342a3b96c38774e2c6187e57fd2206&oe=578F7DAC

aanndd I lost a grub screw which was pretty dumb https://scontent.fakl1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t34.0-12/13816779_1041416745894670_1419233275_n.jpg?oh=1c87ca1eebac6034191366c4254b271d&oe=5790A018

For the grub screw I used M3x6 with Philips head I just dremeled the head to clear the motor. With the grub screw it comes with good luck removing it because it tightens with use. Although I can’t even use my Jacob hubs because the urethane stretched and just slips and Jacob says it’s going to cost $3000 to make new urethane design

I was told where I can get some grub screws near me. Was m3*6 too long in length? :frowning: I’ll try be careful with the urethane, but I understand it was a risk I took with a new product that it may not work right at first

The width of the head was to much so I made it smaller

Managed to get hex grub screws from 3-6mm. The salesman also told me that candle wax is cheaper and works as well as loctite, I already have loctite, but if that helps others…

Hey guys, everything has finally arrived and I will be putting this build together on sunday, Theres a little issue that the Vescs dont fit very easily in the space cell enclosure. I though that If I drilled holes into the end of the enclosure for the phase wires to stick out of then they would fit easier… In any case- I need to re-do the parallel connector so that it’s got wires in between the xt-60’s I just called up the main electronic stores in town and the only one with close to 10 guage wire has 8 guage, single core, flexible wire. Will this work, otherwise I will need to get it from overseas and I dont want to wait  Here’s a video of the vescs if that helps: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wj-Lv1hk1tU Thanks

I think single core is for AC power? Maybe I am wrong. Get stuff made for battery use.

Thanks for letting me know. I’ll ask in store just In case

Can’t you make something like this?

I already have made that, but I don’t see it working since there isn’t much space so it will be difficult to get all xt 60s to fit all together, at least without some serious twisting and turning Anyone seeing irony in not enough space in the space cell?

Hey Luke, just drill through the enclosure to get your motor cables out and add some hot glue around the drill holes to keep the cables steady and seal it as well. Then maybe you can cut half of each VESC battery cables and resolder the XT-60’s. Then just make an adapter like @Michaelinvegas said and you’ll be good to go!

Would cutting the battery cables be easier/ better than making a parallel connector? I’ve already bought 8 awg wire. Single core is fine for battery use

Just FYI, I’m using dual VESCs with a parallel adapter as well and everything fits for me.

Just want to make sure I got this process right: https://scontent.fakl1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t35.0-12/13987756_1056104057759272_1902188264_o.jpg?oh=2b0b7c4d92a07428f67ff30520b9652b&oe=57AEC17C I want to cut away the plastic wrap around the vescs and discard it. Then I want to add heat shrink to the pcb from the bottom end up to the mosfets, leaving them bare. Then I want to add a thin slice of heatshrink from the mosfets to the Phase wire. Finally I want to use some heatsinks. I will apply thermal glue to the bare mosfets, and attach the heatsinks.

Next (unusual) step: I want to be able to remove my vesc easily if needed, but have it securely fitted to the enclosure, while dampening vibration. Does it make sense to use a piece of foam, make cutouts for the caps and heatsinks, I attach the foam securely to the enclosure the vesc is attached via friction fit to the foam. The vesc can have a weak adhesive or velcro to the foam too. The vesc is protected from vibration, can be removed easily and should be secured in there. https://scontent.fakl1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t34.0-12/13957601_1056114174424927_1199042759_n.jpg?oh=e11f66b5949f91ae0cc6abd0d467b189&oe=57AEFC23 (mock-up of foam to give impression) Have I skipped over anything ?

Ok so ive put together most of it, I will finish it next weekend. This is where I was at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIWgJuHdgwI Quick question about amps: I have 2 motors, 2 vescs and 1 space cell pro 3: Pro 3 can handle 40 amps discharge rating and 12 amps charge rating Should I be setting the battery max and min on each vesc at: Batt max: 40 amps Batt Min: 12 amps (This is what @lowGuido told me just now as vescs are connected in parallel ) Batt max: 20 amps Batt min: 12 amps (as Jacob’s video depicts) Batt max:20 amps Batt min:6 amps (this is what made sense to me at first, as there are 2 vescs and 1 space cell)

Hey, just an update and a question. Update: The board is fantastic! It’s not as efficient as outboard motors but it has plenty of torque to get me up a 1km 10% hill and a 200 meter 20% hill. I get all sorts of looks on it. The utathane was slipping but it’s all fixed now with some double sided tape. Question: The main thing I would change about this is the portability. At 41 inches it’s not exactly easy to carry around university. I’ve been thinking about putting the setup on a skateboard. This would involve mounting the trucks on the nose and tail of the skateboard (I have done this before, unpowered, if worked well enough) and the space cell along the flat part of the skateboard. The expected problem is clearance for the space cell. Should I stop dreaming about this idea or is it something worth trying? Picture for reference. Will be using 83mm wheels

Edit: Ignore the bindings! It’s just the first picture I found with the trucks mounted on the nose and tail

I am a pro-strap advocate, but this is dangerous!! With straps, you can stay locked into the board, but you should always have a way to bail if things get scary. If this thing randomly decides to go full speed. The only way out is to fall- and fall forward most likely. You are completely trapped in! You ride with this and there is a high likelihood of eating s#!t.

No no sorry I posted that picture just to give an idea of ground clearance. Ain’t no way I’m using bindings. I think I was clear enough in my question but I can clarify

Ahh ok I see

The space cell will fit on that?? Maybe sell me your space cell and get a 12s1p battery so it’s smaller haha
