10mm pure nickel strip(WTB, USA)/ BATTERY SPOT WELDING DISCUSSION

Guys you should consider nickel plated copper instead if you can. Good welding ability and better conductivity thus less losses in resistance. Better discharges, less heat, more range. Personally I use pure copper.

Can you spot weld pure copper?

I am planning on using 0.15mm nickel strips, with tinned copper braid soldered on top across all the serial connections

0.15mm x 7mm pure nickel strips are only good to about 5-6A before they start heating up significantly

I’m fairly certain you cannot spot weld pure copper strips without a special spot welder.

You cannot spot weld pure copper easily but nickel plated copper you can as easy as nickel!

If I find back spinningmagnets thread I’ll bring it here to provide you more details. He’s very happy with nickel played copper strips.

I have 7mm if that works for you?

Anyone have any of this type of nickel strip that they’ve tested for authenticity? There are a few USA sellers, but I am wary of all the listings. You never know unless you test it yourself…

@jmasta I’ve got a bunch of that stuff from various places but none of them were pure. Those are actually made to be used with holders like these

Thanks. Yeah I was planning on using the holders actually to make a pack that is 6 wide x 2 tall. But it would be annoying to wait 3 weeks for the strips to come in, only to find out it is actually nickel-plated steel

These are awesome btw

Yo~ forget what I wrote up there. Nickel plated copper strips I’ve seen where DIY made with anode. It rocks but unavailable currently. Cheers

How many nickel strips 0.25x7mm would you need for a 12s4p made of Samsung 30Q for full current flow?

I have only one on each of my 4P packs and my board runs amazing! I wonder if the strips run too hot and the maximum power is decreased by a low efficiency

you can use copper with this and the tool isn’t too hard to make or you can buy it for maybe 3 or 4 times the cost of the spot welder. copper strip kills nickel

Damn, I’m bummed because I ordered some of those. these? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01K9PKVK4

Yep those are them

Totally put together half a 10s2p pack with them before I realized. Lame. At least its amazon so they’ll be free

They might work

Got my 5 meter roll from ebay. It seems to be legit nickel, hasn’t rusted in the salt water solution(I put in a small piece to test). I will report back as well when my alibaba 1 kg roll comes. Heres the one i ordered off ebay:

The amazon kalastar strips listed above are nickel plated steel for sure though. They are even rusting already in areas where i touched them with my fingers.

I am a little worried though, because i ordered 0.20 thickness on my alibaba order. The sunkko welder is making pretty good welds with the 0.15, but i think 0.20 may be too thick. I’ll report back and let you all know how that works out too.

I have the 709A, with the wedding pen .010" is the thickest I have been able to use @ 8Pulse when welding across the nickel strip, 6P when welding across the can to nickel strip. .015 with the arms is the best I could do, however, using a small hole punch and placing a hole in the center of each pole, contacting the can and nickel strip should allow a thicker nickel strip to be used when using the pen. The pulse needs to travel from each tip through the can, not through the nickel. This will give a better weld at the tip contacting the nickel. The thinner the material, the greater the surface area needed, nothing can beat the current capacity of Ni Sheet…

This stuff is PURE @ >99.9999 for damascus blade making, available in the USA. https://www.knifemaking.com/category-s/415.htm

This stuff is 99.96% @ 100mm wide, you just have to cut 25mm strips off the roll: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/171512042275?ul_noapp=true

@RootedSuperuser Sorry there is no link because I recycled from industrial machines and house parts.

Alternative you can use is copper wires, size it accordingly to your individual cell’s max wanted discharge and you obtain Tesla-style individual cell fuses.
